FAQ's

WHAT IS ‘SUBU’?

SUBU is your Students’ Union, you are automatically a member when you enrol as a student at BU (you will do this online before you get to BU, (take care to “opt-in to SUBU” ! We are a registered charity and all the profits from any commercial activities go back into funding a huge variety of student activities and projects, clubs & societies and the helpful Advice Service, all of which make your time at BU even better. What’s more all our part-time staff are students and we endeavour to be ethical and environmental in what we do, so you can feel good about spending in your SUBU outlets.

Follow us on Facebook, Twitter, Instagram and Snapchat to stay up to date with all of our news!

WHAT IS THE OLD FIRE STATION?

Probably the greatest students’ union party venue in the Universe. SUBU own and run The Old Fire Station with all its club nights, live music concerts and parties. It’s a legendary venue, the late night social hub of student life in Bournemouth and something we can’t wait to open up again. Keep a very close eye on our social media to find out when the dancefloor will be open and ready for you once more.

WHERE CAN I FIND SUBU ON SOCIAL MEDIA?

You can find us at FB.com/sububournemouth and @SUBUBournemouth on both Instagram and Twitter.

We Are Freshers:

wearefreshersbu - (Twitter and Insta)

Bournemouth University Freshers 2020 (Official) - (Facebook group)

IF I HAVE AN EVENT IDEA OR WAYS TO IMPROVE THINGS FOR THE FUTURE AND OTHER STUDENTS, THEN HOW CAN I BE HEARD?

You could email your us at - subu@bournemouth.ac.uk as we are always hungry for your feedback, or message on Facebook or Twitter. If you would like to become a part-time officer at SUBU then the elections happen in October so keep your eyes peeled on our websites.

WHEN WILL EVENTS BE ABLE TO TAKE PLACE AGAIN?

SUBU is planning events that comply with the Government Restrictions and BU campus reopening plan for September 2020. That will mean that many things will temporarily move online. Some orientation style events will be pretty much unaffected, however social events are still going to have to wait until the green light is given.

WHAT IS HAPPENING IN SEPTEMBER? DO YOU HAVE A LINE-UP?

Semester 1 will start on 21st September and SUBU will start running some freshers events from then. Clearly large social event s and parties still have to wait until the Government removes the restrictions on The Old Fire Station – but when it is given the green light the ‘delayed’ freshers week will let rip. We are also very hopeful to be running an outdoor Freshers Fair on 27th September.

I'VE SEEN OTHER EVENTS ADVERTISED ONLINE. . WHY DON'T YOU HAVE ANY?

DON'T BUY!!
We advise you not to purchase any tickets for any events at present as we feel it is irresponsible for any event organisers to be selling them not knowing when restrictions will be lifted by the Government. Official BU events will not go on sale until we know when restrictions will be lifted and we will inform you on our website when it is safe to book them. In the past people have had real difficulties obtaining refunds from some event organisations In Bournemouth, so be careful and our advice is don’t buy. Remember official BU events will have the BU or SUBU logo on them.

WILL THERE BE CLUB EVENTS?

Nightclub events across England are not allowed as yet, so until we are allowed The Old Fire Station will not be putting on dance or live events in September. As soon as we know that restrictions may be eased we will start letting you know all about our plans to relaunch some of the best club nights in the country – Lollipop, Enter, Applebum, Suddenly Funk, Foreverland and more …

HOW CAN YOU TELL IF AN EVENT IS OFFICIAL?

All of our We Are Freshers events are clearly branded with the BU and SUBU logos and are run through this and the SUBU website (www.subu.org.uk) or the official Facebook group: Bournemouth University Freshers 2020 (Official)
